As we approach the midpoint of the year, it’s not uncommon to find ourselves reflecting on the progress we’ve made—or haven’t made—toward our goals. If you’re feeling discouraged or burned out, you’re not alone. Many small business owners share the same sentiment, whether they haven’t achieved what they set out to do at the beginning of the year or have sacrificed their personal lives and well-being in the pursuit of pushing their business forward.
No matter which camp you’re in, the solution is the same: it’s time to make some adjustments.
When I say “adjustments,” I’m talking about adjustments to your expectations and mentality related to your business goals.
You MUST accept that your energy, resources, mental health, circumstances, and finances change, and change often. And all of those things – like it or not – WILL impact your ability to accomplish your goals. You need to make allowances for your life in your business, and you must accept the fact that things are not going to be in “perfect balance” all the time.
In fact, in my opinion, the concept of perfect work/life balance is a hoax! As a small business owner, chances are there are always some things that are going great while others feel like they’re stuck or falling apart. And you know what? That’s ok!
Yes, I am a marketing strategist for small business owners, but I’m also a freelance writer and course developer, a fashion influencer, and a model. AND I have a fiance and a NEW PUPPY and other important relationships in my life. I have SO many balls in the air at any given time, and I can’t possibly give the same attention to all of it at once. And when I try to, burnout rears its ugly head.
One thing that keeps me going through the ups and downs is accepting that imbalance is a natural part of the process. Business and life both move in cycles, so there will be fluctuation in everything you do.
So, how do you adjust your business goals to make room for your life? Expect and ACCEPT the fluctuation. Expect your energy, your mood, and your productivity to change, and allow room for it in your business. Expect and prepare for the imbalance that will inevitably come, and you can finally stop beating yourself up over it.
As important as your business is, your *life* is more important. Give yourself the grace for adjustment long before you give up on your business goals or feel defeated. When you accept the fact that progress and success are not a straight line, things start to look a little brighter, don’t they?
Now pardon me while I go take my own advice!!
