We’ve been talking a lot about ads lately…but now we’re getting down to the nitty gritty. Here’s how to actually CREATE a video ad to use in your social media advertising campaign!
Of course you can hire a graphic designer to create one for you (if you need a recommendation, I have a great resource for you!) But, if you’re a DIYer like me, you can create an ad using Canva! Let me show you how!
(Please note: Some of these features are only available for Canva Pro users, so if you want the additional functionality, upgrade to a paid membership!)
Start by creating a new file in Canva.
Type in “video ad” in the search bar and choose the kind of ad you want to create. They have the dimensions and specs for ads on all the major social media platforms, so take your pick! I chose Feed Ad Video (Portrait), which has the proper dimensions for an Instagram Feed Ad.
Next, find a template!
I’ve found that the easiest thing to do to create a video ad is to use a template! Canva has TONS of templates you can choose from. Choose one with the movement style that suits your brand and what you want to do with the ad. Don’t worry about colors or photos – you can always easily change those!
Once you choose a style, click on the template. You can add as many of the “pages” of the video that you want. Choose what you want by hovering over the frame and clicking the plus sign that appears.
If you want to use more than one frame, this text box will appear. If you want to add a new frame to your video, click “add as new page.” If you’re trying to replace your current frame with the new one you’ve chosen, you can click replace.
Next, change the design!
Use your brand colors, photos, and logo to create the exact design you want. Whatever you add and replace from the template will take on the original movement of the template unless you choose to change it.
This is what I changed the first frame of my chosen template to look like.
Now adjust your timing for each page/frame.
You can play all your frames/pages and view how long each frame is active by using your bottom control panel.
If you want to adjust the time of any of your frames, use the bottom panel as well. Click the frame you want to adjust and drag either side to fit the length you want.
Lastly, add music!
If you want to add music to your ad, head over to your audio menu. There are a bunch of preset songs you can choose from. You can also search by genre/vibe. (You’ll be happy to know that music and video files on Canva can be used for free for commercial and noncommercial use!)
Preview a song by clicking on it and pressing the play button. Once you choose a song you like, drag it to your bottom toolbar under your frames/pages. Adjust as needed.
Once you’re happy with your ad, download as an mp4 and you’re good to go!
This is just a quick overview of the process, so once you get in and start creating some ads, you might have questions. Don’t hesitate to reach out! I would love to help.
