Believe it or not, as you head into the second half of the year, goal setting is just as important as it is in January. In case you missed it, at the beginning of the year, I put together a Goal Setting Workbook for small business owners. Part of that workbook included how to re-evaluate your goals throughout different points of the year. So let’s dive in on how to do that effectively.
You always want to start goal setting with this question: what does your ideal life look like? This will help you figure out how to prioritize your life and business goals in the coming months. Ask yourself: has anything changed in the past 6 months that has helped or hindered progress toward my initial goals?
You should also be looking at your life goals, not JUST your business goals. You are not a machine, so you need to set your goals while taking into account your lifestyle, values, preferences, and personality.
Review your list of goals from January. How are they going? For some of you, they may be going great. For most of you, I’d venture to guess that you’re well on your way to a few of those goals and have stalled or completely forgotten about a few others.
The first thing you want to do is celebrate your wins, then figure out what worked and what didn’t. This is not the time to chastise yourself or feel bad about what you weren’t able to accomplish. Instead, look at your track record like a scientist: as objectively as possible.
Take a look at all of your goals and determine how important they still are to you. Which ones do you need to finish? Which ones do you need to get rid of? Which do you need to retool or reprioritize? Do you need to add anything to the list?
To reprioritize or re-set your goals, go through the same assessment process you did at the beginning of the year. Ask yourself:
Big goals are less overwhelming when you break them down into mini goals and action steps. This is a critical step in the goal-setting process and will help you formulate a plan and timeline for the rest of the year. Don’t make the mistake of trying to tackle all of your goals all at once. Consider the seasonality of your life and your business and schedule your business efforts accordingly.
There you have it! Re-evaluating your goals mid-year is such a crucial part of being a small business owner. I hope that this helped simplify that process for you and you can move forward through the rest of the year with clarity and purpose.
