OF COURSE YOU SHOULD. It can be a major time-saver and get you unstuck when you’re out of ideas. But it’s not a perfect tool, it takes work to get anything beyond the basics, and you should not copy the text word for word or use it as is.
AI-writing tools have been around for a while, but with all of the attention they are getting lately, awareness has spread like wildfire and use has skyrocketed. ChatGPT, for example, is getting a ton of buzz because it’s free, easy to use, and can write about almost any topic in a conversational tone. Just type in a question or prompt and watch it go!
As a marketing content writer, people are often surprised that I enthusiastically embrace AI writing tools. That’s because some writers are worried that it will put them out of a job.
But I’m not worried. AI can be a powerful tool that can save time and effort for small business owners who don’t have a background in writing or the budget to hire someone to write their content.
However, it won’t replace the quality, creativity, uniqueness, and voice that comes from human writing. (At least not for a while!) Additionally, there may be errors, inaccuracies, or inconsistencies in the copy it generates. Using AI copy as-is without editing or attribution also raises copyright infringement issues, since it is intellectual property created by a platform that you do not own.
So, AI-generated copy is best used as a starting point or as a supplement to original content, and should always be reviewed and edited before publishing.
For me, I have found that it’s a great help when I’m getting a project started. I enter a prompt and the text it generates is basically a summary of the most common stuff that’s been written about a topic. It’s very basic and bland and sometimes repetitive. But I read it and see what ideas bubble up and what I think it’s missing. It gets my creative juices flowing and off I go!
I’ve also asked it to help me rephrase a sentence that I’m stuck on or to shorten a paragraph I’ve written. I don’t always like the edits it makes, but other times, it helps!
Like any tool, AI content generation can be helpful when used properly, but it shouldn’t be overused or expected to produce something that it simply can’t.
We are going to see continued and increased use of AI tools (they are just too easy and tempting not to use!) so my advice is to play around with them and see if they help you! Just don’t copy and paste the content!
This month, we’ll be diving more into all things content creation – including time-saving tools for you and your business!
