Depending on how active you are in the social media game, you may or may not have heard of Threads. If you haven’t, you’ve probably wondered about some new posts with a weird @ symbol and curvy background showing up in some of the Instagram posts or stories you’ve seen recently. That, my friends, is Threads, and it’s the newest social media app put out by Meta (aka Facebook & Instagram).
Threads is a social media app designed for “micro-blogging”: 500 characters or less about what’s on your mind meant to encourage a real time discussion of ideas. If you’re thinking that sounds a lot like Twitter, you’re right!. It’s basically the same, but there are a few differences.
Now, before we talk about whether or not it’s a good idea for you to join, I want to be transparent with you: I haven’t joined Threads and don’t plan to in the near future. But just because I haven’t, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t. The decision to take on a new social media platform is going to rest on your bandwidth and individual business needs. To help you make the decision for yourself, I’ve pulled together some pros and cons for adopting this new platform:
So when making the decision to join Threads and developing a content strategy around it, ask yourself if you have the time to take on something new and if you see a business advantage to doing it. If you’re struggling to get your content seen on the traditional apps, maybe the added reach and newness of Threads will reengage some of your audience. If you already have a *ahem* “Twitter” content strategy, then transferring it to Threads might not be difficult for you.
There’s no downside to adopting the app, but just know that if you activate Threads and then decide to not to actively use it – don’t delete it! You may also delete your Instagram account! Don’t make that mistake.
