Are you dressing for your brand? What does that even mean?! Well, you may not know this, but outside of my marketing business, I’ve been a fashion influencer for years! I love clothes and all things style, and one of my missions is to help women of every shape and size feel confident and fabulous in what they wear.
So, what does fashion have to do with being a small business owner? More than you might think!
They say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but let’s be real—people do. Your appearance is the first thing others notice about you, and it sends a message about your brand before you even say a word. Instead of resisting that, embrace it! You get to control that first impression, and that’s powerful.
Whether you’re on a Zoom call, at a client meeting, networking, posting on social media, or just running errands, how you present yourself matters. You don’t need to dress the same for every occasion, but your style should feel cohesive, like pieces of a puzzle that all fit together to tell the same story.
So, how do you dress as a business owner who’s representing her brand? Here’s my step-by-step guide:
This might sound abstract, but it’s crucial. How would you describe your brand? Fun and whimsical? Strong and powerful? Casual? Professional? Modern? Classic? Vintage? What’s your brand ethos, and how do you showcase that visually—on your website, social media, or marketing materials? Start by answering these questions to define the vibe you want to project.
Your wardrobe should reflect the same style and energy as your brand. If your brand is bold and powerful, showing up in a flowy floral dress might send mixed signals. On the flip side, if your brand is playful and feminine, an all-black pantsuit might not align with your aesthetic.
Pay attention to colors and patterns, too. You don’t need to match your branding colors exactly, but wearing shades that complement your brand helps create a cohesive image. And don’t be afraid to ask for help! Pinterest is a great place for inspiration, and if you have a stylish friend, enlist their expertise.
Once you know the impression you want to make, personalize it. Start with fit—if something doesn’t feel right, don’t wear it! Confidence comes from wearing clothes that fit well and make you feel like you.
Then, add personality with patterns, accessories, or small touches that give people a glimpse of who you are. Authenticity is a huge reason people choose to support small businesses, so don’t let the desire to look “right” strip away what makes you unique.
Once you’ve nailed your look, stick with it! Whether you’re dressing up for a client meeting or heading to the gym, aim for a put-together, cohesive style. Find gym clothes you’d feel confident wearing to the store, or jeans you wouldn’t mind being seen in by a client. Consistency builds recognition and trust, and the longer you stick with your look, the easier it becomes.
You don’t need to pull a Steve Jobs and wear the same thing every day, but your choices should feel intentional and aligned with your brand.
